NARAL Members Were An Early Force in Williams’ Campaign, Worked to Turn Out Pro-Choice Vote Through Election Day

In a victory for women and families across Georgia, Nikema Williams was elected to be the next state senator in Georgia’s 39th district. NARAL was an early force in Georgia’s special elections, taking aim at the Republican supermajority in the State Senate by endorsing pro-choice leaders like Nikema Williams and Jen Jordan. To congratulate Nikema Williams on her victory, NARAL leaders issued the following statements:
“With Trump and his administration launching unprecedented attacks on our reproductive freedom, we need pro-choice champions like Nikema Williams more than ever,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue. “NARAL members, and the seven in 10 voters who support access to abortion care, are thrilled to congratulate Williams on her victory. This election has made one thing clear: Georgia voters are sick and tired of extreme, anti-choice politicians targeting women and families in the state legislature. Williams is a proven champion who will stand up for women and families across the Peach State.”
“NARAL Georgia members could not be more excited to congratulate State Senator-elect Nikema Williams, a true champion for our reproductive rights,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia State Director Laura Simmons. “Trump’s GOP allies in the Georgia legislature have proven they would rather put their fringe ideological agenda and right-wing donors ahead of the needs of Georgian women and families—and voters have had enough. Nikema Williams has been a leader on defending our reproductive freedom, including access to contraceptives and abortion, and will be a welcome change from the partisan politics-as-usual in the state capital.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia worked hard to turn out pro-choice voters across the state with over 16,008 calls and 17,553 texts to voters across the 39th district. NARAL members went door-to-door to support pro-choice champions Nikema Williams and Jen Jordan, and sent multiple, targeted mailings in support of their candidacies.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
