NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia Condemns Georgia Supreme Court’s Ruling Reinstating Extreme Ban on Abortion

Atlanta, GA
 — Today, the Georgia Supreme Court reinstated a ban on abortion at about six weeks, which is before many people even know they are pregnant. This ruling comes after the ban had been struck down by a lower court last week.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Today’s decision is a total affront to the millions of Georgians who are sick and tired of being denied their fundamental freedoms, including the right to abortion, and this ruling will only motivate people to reject anti-choice extremism and reelect Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock in the upcoming runoff election. NARAL and our 83,000 members in Georgia will be working alongside our partners in the state to continue fighting back for freedom and abortion access.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America Southeast Campaigns Director Alicia Stallworth released the following statement in response:

“The Georgia Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate this extreme ban on abortion is a devastating blow to our reproductive freedom—but we aren’t giving up. NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia’s 83,000 members across the state will be organizing day in and day out to make sure that Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock is reelected to fight back against attacks on reproductive freedom in the Peach State and across the country.”

Though the vast majority of Georgians support reproductive freedom, out-of-touch, anti-choice Republican lawmakers in the state passed one of the most extreme bans and restrictions on abortion in the country. In October, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia and Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates released new polling from EMC Research showing that Georgia voters overwhelmingly oppose efforts to restrict abortion access:

  • 92% of Georgia voters do not believe abortion should be illegal.
  • 62% of voters oppose—and 55% strongly oppose—the recent overturning of Roe by the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 62% of voters oppose—and 52% strongly oppose—Georgia’s six-week ban on abortion.
  • 83% oppose criminal penalties for medical professionals who provide reproductive health care.
